Happy Thanksgiving

6" x 6" oil on canvas panel
6" Squared Exhibition opening in Costa Mesa, CA December 3, 2011

Hello, again and Happy Thanksgiving to all! Sorry to be out of touch. I never could keep up with a diary...but happily I have been able to find easel time. Actually, lots of painting going on here, table centerpieces and favors for an event (my sis helped me out on those), larger paintings for Corse Gallery and Atelier, in Jacksonville, and some small paintings to enter into the 6" squared show (4 were accepted!). And more excitement !!! a mention in November's issue of Southwest Art Magazine with a picture of my painting (pg. 30). How crazy is that?

Now I am headed to the kitchen to whip up one more Thanksgiving treat, and then off to celebrate with family. Gobble-gobble!

Red Again?

5 " x 5" original oil on linen panel
$95 plus $5.95 shipping - unframed

It looks like red is my favorite color...and maybe it is right now...I just bought a red t-shirt and a red dress! (My favorite color is actually turquoise, and has been since I had a fountain pen with peacock blue ink. That was in Jr. High...Yikes!) Anyway, Happy 4th of July to all...

Mug One

Fun to try something new....an analogous color scheme, and a bit less "blendy"! Why is it so hard to simplify?

Another Rose?

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
$95 plus $5.95 shipping

Just back from a fabulous trip and looking forward to some easel time....I actually started this painting before I left...got the rose looking pretty good, but struggled with the pot....Also there were quite a few more leaves in the set-up, but I painted the rose so big...that everything would not fit in....so...this is what I came up with......

Cool

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
$95 unframed $5.95 shipping

When you think of brass, you think yellow...when you think of sunflowers, you think yellow. I am thinking, great, a composition with color harmony! This one really demonstrates the concept of temperature....the sunflower is warmer than the brass container.....Always a comparison and not always so easy to see....

Together

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
$95 unframed $5.95 shipping

I was really happy when I found these two cherries still "together"! They found a place on my set-up station immediately....Being together is a good thing...not just for cherries!

Getting Closer

8" x 10" original oil on linen panel
NFS

I have tried to paint this rose another dozen times (at least)! At this point I think I am getting closer....so I am putting it away for now. Back to roses on another day!

Flower Explosion

5" x 5" original oil on linen panel - SOLD
$95 unframed - $5.95 shipping

original flower (my perspective was slightly different)

This flower is amazingly beautiful (in real life). It is from a cactus and blooms for only 1 day!
My friend and painting buddy, has had a few blooms this spring, and we have been trying to figure out colors and temperatures each time it flowers. Basically it is vibrant fuchsia and warm, bright red...and I do mean bright! So, after a few unsuccessful tries and wipes, I decided to throw caution to the wind...and just go for it, placing in the darks, then the lights and reshaping the petals with the background....No, it doesn't look like a photo (which is not a bad thing), but I think it looks like a flower, and a pretty colorful one at that!

More than 10 Minutes

More than 10 minutes, but less than 10 hours! This is the longer version of my last post! Tiny containers meet my "cuteness" requirement!!!

10 minute study

8" x 6" oil on linen panel
NFS

On the last workshop day, we had a demonstration of a quick study, and then we got to try it! This time, no glass for me! A great exercise for getting the "big" picture and a way to practice being loose and not overworking a painting. I took a photo, so I am going to paint another one in more than 10 minutes..we can compare. I really like these 2 vessels....plus, I am planning to make it SQUARE!!!! Imagine that!

Almost Canned

8" x 8" original oil on linen panel

The last glass painting of my workshop...This time, clear glass! This painting started out on a 10" x 8" panel...We decided that there was too much empty space on the right of the subject, so this one I did cut to 8" square...I think it works better, plus, I LOVE the square format!

A Sunny Pair

Day 2 and 3 of Elizabeth Robbins workshop, still working on glass....This time, no wipes! I am making progress!

Undone

10" x 8" original oil on canvas panel
NFS

This is the first painting that I started in my workshop with Elizabeth Robbins in Salt Lake City. It was my intention to learn how to paint glass...I spent about half the day wiping off the rose that was being held by the glass.....I brought it home "undone" and tried again, but wiped again....So, here is my glass waiting for something to hold....another student suggested that I cut the canvas to a square..(effectively omitting the rose)..That could work..but eventually, I will get a rose that works. Then I will repost!

Lady in Waiting - DPW Challenge

6" X 6" Original Oil on canvas panel
NFS

The minute I saw this challenge, I had to check it out to see if the girl was a friend of mine who lives in NYC.....This is one of my first "people in location" paintings....It was fun to try! As usual I had many questions to answer before I got started and a few still remain..but this week, I am off to study with my friend and teacher, Elizabeth Robbins....she can help me answer the tough ones! See you next week!

Color Challenge - DPW

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel

This weeks challenge was to choose a color scheme for your painting....I picked split complementary. Red, Blue Green, and Yellow Green....from the traditional color wheel. And since I have just been to a demo and lecture on palette knife painting, I decided to try that, too.......It was fun to use a lot of paint and texture! And it is always fun to be in front of the easel!

Follow the Leader

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel - SOLD

These pigs have attitude and I have been wanting to paint them! I did several set-ups and a few wipe-offs before finally choosing this one. It looked interesting and I even had a name for it from the beginning.......BUT...painting 2 objects that are exactly the same, but slightly different in point of view, quite crazy! Lesson learned! VARIETY!!!

Wake-up Call

In keeping with the chicken theme, I pulled out this cute ceramic rooster from the prop shelf. I am pretty sure this one is a rooster!

Chicken Challenge - DPW

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
SOLD

This was last week's challenge...a chicken! It became quite obvious that this chicken could not look cute with evil eyes!...I found that evil eyes are EASY to do...Cute eyes???? a lot harder. I hope I painted "cute" eyes. You can be the judge...P.S. My hubby, who raised chickens and sold eggs as a teen, says this cutey-pie might be a rooster! Who knew?????

Cream and Sugar?

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
$95.00 unframed
$5.95 shipping

I seem to be on a beverage theme....this one a bit more proper! I love painting little pitchers and I am not sure why....the spout? the handle? not knowing what is inside??? It is a mystery. This one challenged me, white (which isn't really white) and silver (which isn't really silver). Crazy!

Lemoncello

6" x 6" original oil on canvas panel

Lemoncello reminds me of a great painting trip to Tuscany with my favorite teacher and good friends...some I knew and others I know now! This little cordial cup (2 actually) was a freebie with purchase. I could NOT pass them up! Fun times and great memories!

Re Do

6" x 6" original oil on linen panel
$95 unframed
$5.95 shipping

Today's painting is a re do of one that I painted before. A friend heard that Alizarin Purple was a great color to use when painting copper and I wanted to try it....WOW!! It really brought this pot to life. It was dull and wimpy before I used my new tube. Now I think it looks like metal!

Spring Arrival

8" x 6" original oil on canvas panel
on Exhibit at Crealde School of Art

Always one of the first flowers to bloom in our Florida spring, azaleas. This color pink was tough to get! It took two of us an entire afternoon to come up with it....She wiped off her canvas and I tried again on my own....I finally used Thio Violet, a tube that I purchased for a recent workshop. I didn't use it then, but I was glad to have it for this one. I am thinking there are some other flowers that could benefit from this color! I will let you know when I use it again ;-)

Rose challenge

8" x 6"
NFS

Another challenge from DPW...Paint a rose. Sounds simple enough, they even posted a photo of the rose and what a painting could look like! I decided to use a palette knife to apply the background, hoping it would look like "greenery". After a wipe off (or two), this is the painting I came up with. I hope you enjoy it!

Zippo Challenge

6" x 6" oil painting on canvas panel
NFS

This challenge was to paint the Zippo lighter with only 3 colors...French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Titanium White...I loved figuring this out! I was also good practice for painting reflective metal....I am ready to tackle some silver somethings! I remember my grandfather having a lighter like this!

Return to Blogging

10 minute challenge
NFS

Today a friend has encouraged me to return to blogging...thanks! In the past months I have taken a still life class with Stacy Barter and then a 3 day figure workshop....my still life paintings from class do not qualify as small paintings...actually painted one that is 24" x 24".... so no posts for them, and I just have one thing to say about figures...FUN but harder than flowers! Meanwhile I have been painting some of the Daily Paintworks weekly challenges. This daisy is one of those...The challenge was to paint the same object 8 times...using only 10 minutes for each painting. So some are not quite finished. The idea is that you improve with each one, the last being the best. I got a few that I liked but I am not sure that there was steady growth...1-4 are on the left panel and 5 - 8 on the right....You can be the judge!

Sunflowers are so much fun to paint. I love the way the light shines through the petals and makes the blossom glow!
